Environmental modification of SERTEGO in Escombreras approved.
Por FactBox Admin

The General Directorate for the Environment of the Regional Ministry for the Environment, Industry, Universities, Research and Mar Menor has approved the non-substantial modification of the Integrated Environmental Authorisation in force in favour of the company Servicios Medioambientales, S.L.U., commercially known as SERTEGO, for the oil and marpole treatment activity located on the N-343 road, km 9, Valle de Escombreras, 30350 Cartagena (Murcia). The Resolution, dated 27 July 2026 and signed on 6 August, is published as a notice in the Official Gazette of the Region of Murcia (BORM) number 188, corresponding to Monday 17 August 2026, on page 19591, within section I (Autonomous Community), notices subsection.
Legal basis of the authorisation
The resolution is adopted in accordance with two fundamental provisions of the Spanish environmental legal system:
- Article 10.2 of Royal Legislative Decree 1/2016, of 16 December, approving the consolidated text of the Law on Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control.
- Article 48 of Law 21/2013, of 9 December, on Environmental Assessment, which regulates modifications to integrated environmental authorisations.
Both provisions establish the administrative procedure for approving changes to installations requiring an integrated environmental authorisation, distinguishing between substantial and non-substantial modifications. In this case, the competent authority has determined that the modification submitted by SERTEGO does not substantially alter the original conditions of the authorisation.
The company and its activity in Escombreras
Servicios Medioambientales, S.L.U. (SERTEGO), with Tax ID B-83667725, operates in the industrial complex of the Valle de Escombreras, one of the main chemical hubs in the Region of Murcia and on the Spanish Mediterranean coast. The installation covered by this modification is dedicated to the treatment of used oils and marpoles, i.e. oily waste from industrial and automotive processes requiring specialised management for recycling or safe disposal.
The Valle de Escombreras concentrates a large number of industrial installations subject to integrated environmental authorisation, which is why any modification to their conditions requires oversight by the regional environmental administration.

Relevance for the region
The approval of this non-substantial modification guarantees that the SERTEGO treatment plant in Escombreras can continue operating under updated conditions without needing to undergo a full environmental impact assessment procedure. For the Escombreras Valley industry and for the residents of Cartagena and surrounding areas, this resolution means the continuity of an essential oily waste management service, subject to the scrutiny of the regional environmental administration.
