Almendralejo announces the Romantic Tapas Route competition

The Almendralejo City Council (Badajoz), at the proposal of the Department of Cultural Action and Promotion, has announced the Romantic Tapas Route Contest, framed within the activities of the Literary Route on Romanticism. The call is published in the Official Gazette of the Province of Badajoz number 169, dated September 3, 2026, via announcement 3486/2026 (full rules) and extract 3484/2026, with identification BDNS 927236 in the National Grants Database.
The contest seeks to promote the participation of the local hospitality industry in the creation of gastronomic proposals inspired by Romanticism, contributing to the dissemination of the Literary Route and the revitalization of the municipality’s economic and tourist activity. The prizes are awarded on a competitive basis and are granted as subsidies, governed by Law 38/2003, of November 17, General Law on Subsidies, and its implementing regulations.
Participation and registration
Any establishment in the municipality of Almendralejo dedicated to catering may participate. The registration period begins on the day the rules are published in the BOP and ends on September 15, 2026.
- Registration via the electronic office of the Almendralejo City Council or through the channels specified in article 16.4 of Law 39/2015.
- Submission of a photograph of the tapa, its name and ingredients, as well as the name, address, and telephone number of the establishment.
- Each participant must create at least one Romantic Tapa, inspired by 19th-century Spanish gastronomy.
- Maximum retail price of 5.00 euros.
- The tapas will be available from September 21 to 27, 2026.
Prizes and jury
Three monetary prizes will be awarded to the highest-rated tapas, with a total budget allocated to item 33400 48000 of the 2026 municipal budget for an amount of 850.00 euros:
- First prize: 450.00 euros.
- Second prize: 250.00 euros.
- Third prize: 150.00 euros.
The evaluation will be carried out by a semi-professional jury composed of a chef or representative of the hospitality sector, a representative from the Tourism Office, a representative from the Hospitality School, and a representative from the Women’s Associations of Almendralejo. Creativity, presentation, culinary quality, value for money, and the link to the historical context of the 19th century and Romanticism will be assessed.
Verdict and resolution
The jury will visit the establishments in person during the days of the route, and the verdict will be made public at an event in Almendralejo on September 27, 2026, as part of the programming of the XXI Literary Route on Romanticism. The verdict will be a proposal and will be submitted to the Local Governing Board, the competent body to resolve the procedure; any of the prizes may remain vacant if the tapas do not meet sufficient quality. The announcement is signed by the mayor-president, José María Ramírez Morán.
The call reinforces Almendralejo’s commitment to gastronomic and cultural tourism, involving local hospitality and visitors in one of the most unique events on the region’s literary calendar, with a direct impact on the municipality’s economic activity during the last week of September.
