Alberta proclaims classroom law stripping politics and ideology from schools

The Lieutenant Governor of Alberta has proclaimed most sections of An Act to Remove Politics and Ideology from Classrooms and Amend the Education Act, 2026 in force as of September 1, 2026, in a proclamation published in The Alberta Gazette, Part I, Vol. 122, No. 17, dated September 15, 2026. The order brings into effect sections 1 to 12, 14 to 17, 19 to 22 and 24 of the Act, reshaping how politics and ideology are handled in Alberta’s classrooms.

The proclamation was issued by Salma Lakhani, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, on August 26, 2026, by and with the advice and consent of the Executive Council. It was countersigned by Mickey Amery, K.C., Provincial Secretary, and bears the Great Seal of the Province of Alberta.

Legal basis and scope

Section 25 of the Act provides that the legislation, except section 23, comes into force on Proclamation. The proclamation therefore brings the bulk of the statute into operation while leaving section 23 unproclaimed for now.

• Sections 1 to 12, 14 to 17, 19 to 22 and 24 are now in force.
• Section 23 remains outside the proclamation and is not yet in force.
• The effective date is September 1, 2026, retroactive to the start of the school year.

Signatories and process

The proclamation follows the standard constitutional process for bringing provincial statutes into force. Malcolm Lavoie, K.C., Deputy Attorney General, is named in the instrument, which was issued under the authority of the Crown in right of Alberta.

• Mickey Amery, K.C., Provincial Secretary, countersigned the letters patent.
• The instrument was made patent in the fourth year of the reign of Charles the Third.

Impact on schools

The Act amends the Education Act to remove politics and ideology from classrooms, a change that affects all Alberta schools, teachers and students. With the September 1 effective date, the new classroom rules apply from the beginning of the 2026–27 school year, giving school boards and educators immediate obligations under the amended statute.
