Abierto el plazo de candidaturas a la Medalla de Extremadura de 2027

The Regional Government of Extremadura (Junta de Extremadura) has opened the application period for the 2027 Medal of Extremadura, the highest award granted by the autonomous community. Proposals may be submitted between October 1, 2026, and May 31, 2027, according to the Resolution of September 22, 2026, published in the Official Gazette of Extremadura (DOE) number 188, dated September 29, 2026, with official reference 2026062430.

The resolution is signed by the Secretary General of the Vice Presidency and the Ministry of Presidency, Coordination of Government Action, Interior and Emergencies, David González Gil, and implements Decree 177/2013, of September 24, which regulates the procedure for granting the award. Article 4 of said regulation requires the publication of the proposal annex in the Official Gazette and the public notification of the opening of the period and the required requirements.

The award recognizes the singular merits, work, or contributions of maximum exemplarity and recognized significance of individuals, institutions, groups, or collectives—Extremadurans, Spaniards, or foreigners—who, throughout a consolidated career, have stood out in shaping a more just and supportive society or in the defense, promotion, or fostering of the interests or image of Extremadura. Those who have provided relevant, eminent, or extraordinary services to the region may also be awarded, regardless of the field of their activity and whether it took place inside or outside the autonomous territory.

Who can propose candidacies

Decree 177/2013 reserves the initiative to the following authorities and entities:

  • The president of the Assembly of Extremadura, following an agreement by the Chamber’s Board, on their own initiative or at the proposal of at least one parliamentary group.
  • Members of the Governing Council of the Regional Government of Extremadura.
  • City councils and other local entities of a representative nature.
  • Public entities or institutions, as well as private cultural, scientific, or socio-economic entities, collectives, and associations based in Extremadura, or at the request of associative entities of Extremadurans settled outside the region.

Requirements and documentation

Every proposal must accurately identify the proposing person, collective, or entity and the candidate, and detail the extraordinary merits and their significance. The required documentation is as follows:

  • A report containing the data that makes the proposed candidacy deserving of the honor.
  • A biography, in the case of natural persons.
  • Optionally, reasoned supports and endorsements, indicating their number and identification, as well as any other complementary document or information that reinforces the merits.

Candidacies already submitted in previous years must be accompanied by an express communication from the promoting entity reiterating the will to propose the award again for 2027, in addition to new data updating the concurrent merits.

How and where to submit the proposal

Proposals shall be addressed to the Presidency of the Comisión de la Medalla de Extremadura (Extremadura Medal Commission) and must be submitted by electronic means, in accordance with article 14.2 of Law 39/2015, of October 1, on the Common Administrative Procedure of Public Administrations. The enabled channel is the Electronic Registry of the Junta de Extremadura, or any of the electronic registries provided for in article 16.4.a) of the same law.

The application form, which appears as an annex to the resolution, is available on the official website of the Junta. However, proposals that, without conforming to that form, meet the requirements of Decree 177/2013 will also be admitted. The headquarters of the Comisión de la Medalla de Extremadura is located at Plaza del Rastro, s/n, 06800 Mérida (Badajoz).

The call comes during a fiscal year marked by organizational changes in the regional Administration, as the competence to issue the resolution derives from the President’s Decree 11/2026, of April 29, and from article 2.2 of Decree 103/2026, of May 26**, regarding the organic structure of the Presidency.

An award with an eight-month window

The established calendar grants slightly more than eight months to prepare the proposals, a wide margin that seeks to facilitate the participation of city councils, collectives, and social entities from across the region. The call is of particular interest to local institutions and the Extremaduran associative fabric, which have until May 31, 2027, to formalize their candidacies and gather the necessary endorsements.
