The Provincial Council grants 206,500 euros in grants to Olympic athletes

The Provincial Council of A Coruña has approved the final granting of scholarships for athletes from the province 2026 in Olympic sports, with a total budget of €206,500.00. The resolution, signed by president Valentín González Formoso and general secretary Miguel Iglesias Martínez, was published in the Official Gazette of the Province of A Coruña number 171, on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, under announcement number 2026/5841.

The final granting is based on the provisional resolution of the Presidency 30159, dated July 6, 2026, which opened a period of 10 business days for allegations and withdrawals. The expenditure will be charged to budget item 0612/3411/481, phase A, operation 220260000060, managed by the Social Action, Education, Sports and Youth Service.

Dismissed allegations

During the allegations period, four submissions were presented, all of which were dismissed in accordance with the jury’s reports, which confirmed the scores awarded:

• Luz García Paladino, represented by Jesús Antonio García Parada, disagreed with her daughter’s score.
• Ángel David Rivas Piotrowski, represented by Ángel Manuel Rivas Gonçalves, requested a review of the sports history valuation according to base 6.1.1.
• Leire Hermida Rodríguez, represented by José María Hermida Leonardo, requested a review of the score of her sports project.
• Daniel García Pernas, represented by Julio García Fernández, requested a review of the score awarded.

The jury’s reports were notified to the interested parties on August 11, 2026.

Scholarships by age group

The scholarships, of €3,500 each, are distributed into four groups according to the age of the athletes:

• Group A (12-17 years): 23 scholarships are granted, three more than the 20 planned, as three from group D remained vacant. Beneficiaries with scores between 23.5 and 17 points.
• Group B (18-23 years): 20 scholarships for the people with the highest scores, between 39 and 20.5 points.
• Group C (24-32 years): scholarships for athletes born between 1994 and 2002.
• Group D (33 years or older): one scholarship, for Almudena Quereda Rodríguez, in adapted sports swimming.

Among the disciplines represented are taekwondo, rowing, swimming, canoeing, badminton, table tennis, sailing, weightlifting, athletics, judo, skateboarding, climbing, triathlon, and golf.

Tie-breaks and substitutes

To resolve ties at 17 points in group A and at 20.5 and 20 in group B, the jury evaluated other merits of the sports history, applying the criterion of the second best result of the highest sporting level and, if the tie persisted, the following ones. Thus, Ruben Valiña Neira and Tomasa Franco Martínez obtained a main position after breaking the tie.

The following were appointed as final substitutes:

• Group A: Jeyden Jael Silva Guerrero, Aroa Jiménez Filgueira, Irene Gómez García and Cristina Martínez Senra.
• Group B: Elisa Fernández Rodríguez, Emma Vázquez Purriños, Sergi Navarro Losada and Borja López González.
• In groups C and D, it is not appropriate to appoint substitutes as there are no further applications entitled to the grant.

Relevance for grassroots sports

The resolution, signed in A Coruña on September 4, 2026, exhausts the administrative route. An optional appeal for reconsideration may be filed against it within one month, or a contentious-administrative appeal within two months. Publication in the official bulletin serves as notification to the interested parties, in accordance with article 45 of Law 39/2015. These grants represent direct support for families and grassroots sports in the province, by financing the competition of Olympic athletes of all ages.
